Recently new legislation was passed that requires all homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Tax Department in order to receive the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years. The deadline for registering is December 31, 2013, right around the corner. It seems that there were many fraudulent filings and the government is trying to crack down. You will not have to register in order to receive their 2013 STAR exemptions and will not have to re-register every year. To register, you can visit www.tax.ny.gov
For those of you not familiar with the STAR program it provides tax relief for the school portion of your property taxes. The amount varies form town to town and can save you a fair amount.
